ORLANDO — In this video from ASN Kidney Week, Mike Spigler, shared the results of a survey connected to the Unknown Causes of Kidney Disease Project regarding genetic testing for chronic kidney disease.

A survey of 300 health care professionals, including 83 nephrologists, revealed 8% used genetic testing among patients with suspected CKD. Further, 25% have never used genetic testing to determine the cause of CKD.

“About two-thirds of the providers that we interviewed said that they were worried about the financial burden — out-of-pocket costs — on their patients that may come from genetic testing. From the work we’ve done, we don’t believe that’s a true thing that’s there, but the perspective is certainly still there. That’s something we have to work on,” Spigler told Healio. “Another issue they identified is a lack of access in genetic counselors.”
