ORLANDO — In this video from ASN Kidney Week, Krithika Rajagopalan, PhD, MPH, discusses the importance of identifying catheter-related bloodstream infections in patients using central venous catheters.

In a retrospective analysis, researchers examined data for 51,000 patients using hemodialysis with central venous catheters. Among the cohort, 33% had catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Further, one-third of these patients developed the infections within 30 days and nearly 50% developed the infections within 90 days.

“It is important to note that when catheters are not properly cared for, the consequences of CRBSIs can be huge, and it can be staggering for the health care system as we find this out in our results,” Rajagopalan told Healio.
