National speakers will discuss key issues facing advanced practice providers, including the nursing shortage and career advancement opportunities, at the Nephrology Nursing Practice, Management and Leadership Conference, organizers said.
The conference, being held Oct. 1-3 in San Diego as a hybrid meeting, “is different than our national symposium,” Tamara Kear, PhD, RN, CNN, FAAN, executive director of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA), told Healio. “Our fall meeting attracts more advanced practice nurses, nurse educators and those in academia,” she said.
The meeting also offers time for attendees to network, Kear said.
Key sessions at the meeting include presentations by Ernest Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of the American Nurses Association, and April N. Kapu, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FCCM, FAAN, president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Both speakers will touch on the current nursing climate and the legislative, regulatory and policy initiatives aimed at addressing issues affecting nurse well-being, Kear said.
“We have lost direct care providers and nursing managers,” Kear told Healio. “We know there is a great need for more nurses in nephrology and other specialties as well.
“Over 40% of our nurses tell us they are facing burnout because of the pandemic. We are having more conversations on how to resolve that and bring more people interested in nursing into nephrology,” Kear said.
Cindi Calabrese, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, RN-BC, the director of education for ANNA, said the conference will address the ongoing nursing shortage, “which may be felt more in some areas because of shifting of nurses to other roles during the pandemic, like travel nursing, telehealth, telephone triage and remote case management,” Calabrese said.
Policy talks
This year the conference offers a two-part program with leaders and health policy experts from several national nursing and health professional organizations to discuss legislative, regulatory and policy initiatives aimed at issues affecting nurse well-being.
The sessions will cover staffing issues, burnout, work environment and managing COVID-19 in the dialysis clinic.
Clinic safety
Meeting organizers are also offering a session on safety in the work environment, including ways to avoid safety hazards in the dialysis clinic, help on managing patients during natural disasters and addressing workplace violence.
“This session will help the nursing staff communicate with patients and learn about how to protect themselves,” Lou Ann Leary, director of association services for ANNA, told Healio.
