AKF uses emergency funds to aid patients affected by Hurricane Fiona

In response to Hurricane Fiona that has resulted in flash flooding and power outages for 1.3 million people, the American Kidney Fund has activated its Disaster Relief Program.
Patients on dialysis and kidney transplant recipients affected by the hurricane are encouraged to apply for a $250 grant to help with lost medications, special renal diet foods, temporary housing and transportation to treatment.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Puerto Rico as they grapple with the devastating effects of Hurricane Fiona,” LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of AKF, said in a press release. “AKF is ready and available to assist people on dialysis and post-transplant patients by providing financial aid. These funds give critical, lifesaving support during emergencies, such as this one, and they will help lessen the financial burden on Puerto Ricans impacted by this disaster.”
As Healio has previously reported, the AKF’s Disaster Relief Program has assisted more than 2,300 dialysis and post-transplant patients during natural disasters in 2021. Last month, the program was used to assist patients affected by floods in Kentucky.
