Researchers launch survey to examine views on palliative care in nephrology

University of Washington researchers are conducting a survey among kidney care professionals on how they present palliative care options to patients who are facing kidney failure.
“We want to better understand how nephrology providers are caring for patients who forgo kidney replacement therapy and how palliative care options are being presented to patients,” Susan P.Y. Wong, MD, MS, principal investigator of the study and an assistant professor of medicine in the division of nephrology at the University of Washington (UW), told Healio. “There is very little information available about providers' experiences with and perspectives on caring for these patients.”
The survey is open to practicing adult nephrologists, nephrology nurse practitioners and nephrology physician assistants. Kidney care professionals with little or no experience in caring for patients who forgo kidney replacement therapy are welcome to participate, Wong said. Respondents can also participate in a 30- to 45-minute phone or video interview with the UW researchers on their views about foregoing dialysis.
Study coordinator Julie Chotivatanapong, BA, said survey questions cover demographic and clinical backgrounds, experience with caring for patients who forgo dialysis and kidney transplant and how kidney professionals use terminology to label approaches to caring for patients who forgo dialysis and kidney transplant. Chotivatanapong said the survey will take about 5 minutes to complete.
For providers who agree to be contacted after completing the survey, researchers will randomly invite approximately 35 providers to participate in a 30- to 45-minute phone or video interview.
“This is an opportunity for the medical community to learn how to better support patients who forgo kidney replacement therapy and the nephrology professionals who care for them,” Wong said.
