The National Kidney Foundation announced it has entered a partnership with the American Society of Transplantation’s Living Donor Circle of Excellence program.

According to a press release, the Circle of Excellence is designed to increase the number living organ donors by acknowledging employers that supply lost wages while donors recover from surgery. To join the Circle of Excellence, employers can implement policies that provide salary support to employees who become living organ donors or offer financial support to employees requiring an organ transplant but whose donor faces income loss during the recovery period.

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, there are 73 members of the Circle of Excellence, now including the NKF. The Circle of Excellence recognizes its members online and at live events throughout the year and with additional benefits.

“Every day 12 people die on the waitlist,” Kevin Longino, CEO of NKF, said in the release. “We need to rip down every possible barrier to becoming a living donor, and employers who join the Circle of Excellence are doing just that. By supporting those willing to help others struggling with life-threatening illness and helping to reduce any financial burden from living donation, employers can actively promote access to transplantation for all.”
