The director of the Cedars-Sinai Nephrology and Transplant Immunology programs in the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center, Stanley C. Jordan, MD, has been elected to join the Association of American Physicians.
According to the press release, 70 physicians are elected to the association each year and must have made “outstanding” contributions to biomedical research. Jordan has been elected for his use of immunomodulatory therapies in preventing organ rejection in transplant patients.
Jordan used plasmapheresis with high-dose immune globulin and B-cell depletion when developing the immunomodulatory therapies, strengthening the immune systems of patients in need of organ transplants. His findings have allowed transplant patients to receive blood type-incompatible transplants.
“Dr. Jordan’s work in transplant immunology has been life-changing for patients around the world,” Shlomo Melmed, MB, ChB, executive vice president of academic affairs and dean of the medical faculty at Cedars-Sinai, said in the release. “His election is an acknowledgement of his major contributions that have saved lives and added significantly to our understanding of transplant medicine.”
Jordan will join about 1,200 active members and 700 emeritus and honorary members in the Association of American Physicians.
“I feel extremely honored and privileged to have been elected as a member of the Association of American Physicians, as this is one of the highest honors given to academic physicians in the U.S.,” Jordan said. “I feel it is a team effort, and a recognition and validation of how creative scholarship and clinical research leads to innovative therapies that improve the lives and well-being of our patients every day.”
