The American Kidney Fund has activated its Disaster Relief Program to provide emergency grants of $250 for dialysis and post-transplant patients who live within 50 miles of an active wildfire in New Mexico.

LaVarne A. Burton

“Our thoughts are with all those who have had to flee their homes due to the wildfires that continue to burn in New Mexico. We stand ready to assist people on dialysis and post-transplant patients with financial aid from the American Kidney Fund’s Disaster Relief Program,” LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of the AKF, said in the release.

According to the release, emergency grants can cover temporary housing and transportation to treatment in addition to replacing lost medications, special renal diet foods, clothing and other personal essentials lost because of the wildfires.

As Healio has previously reported, the AKF’s Disaster Relief Program has assisted more than 2,300 dialysis and post-transplant patients during natural disasters last year, such as during Hurricane Ida and the Texas winter storm.

“These grants provide timely aid during moments of crisis and will help ease the financial burden faced by so many who experience a major natural disaster,” Burton said.
