In this video, Timothy Pflederer, MD, president of the Renal Physicians Association, spoke about the payment cuts some vascular specialists will face when treating Medicare patients for access complications.

“The Medicare Fee Schedule has been good to us this year,” Pflederer told Healio. “If you work in interventional nephrology doing dialysis access procedures in a vascular access center, payment has been relatively steady and you will see about a 3% increase,” he said. “But if you practice in an office, the story is different.”

Due to an update in clinical labor pricing, procedures done in an office-based lab will face a 20% cut in the next 5 years. “That could truly shut down office-based vascular labs,” Pflederer said.
