BOSTON — In this video from the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings, Joseph A. Vassalotti, MD talks about the first live conference of the NKF in 2 years, amid thoughts on patients who died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vassalotti, the chief medical officer for the NKF, noted the number of patients who died amid the pandemic and its impact on the patient population. “For the first time in the history of the End-Stage Kidney Disease Program, the number of prevalent patients in 2020 was lower than the previous year,” Vassalotti said. “During the presidential address, [NKF] President Paul M. Palevsky, MD, asked for a moment of silence for those who suffered the loss of a loved one during the pandemic,” he told Healio.
But the dialysis community still has a responsibility to remain vigilant in convincing patients on dialysis that a vaccination against COVID-19 is important. “We also must have the adequate staffing that we need to ensure that patients get the care they deserve,” Vassalotti said.
