NKF announces Donald W. Seldin Award winner

J. Kevin Tucker, MD, nephrologist and vice president for education at Mass General Brigham, was honored with the Donald W. Seldin Award from the National Kidney Foundation, according to a press release.

According to the release, the NKF presents the award to a leading clinical nephrologist, researcher and educator in the specialty of kidney care to honor the memory of Donald W. Seldin, MD.

“Dr. Tucker epitomizes the memory of Dr. Seldin in every way,” Paul Palevsky, MD, president of the NKF, said in the release. “In addition to being recognized as an outstanding clinician and teacher, he is a leading advocate for home dialysis therapies, is an advocate for health care equity, and serves as a volunteer at the NKF of the New England office’s medical advisory board.”

In addition to being an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Tucker is the co-director of Harvard Medical School’s Master’s in Clinical Service Operations program. He also served as program director for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital-Massachusetts General Hospital Nephrology Program for 10 years and as Harvard Medical School’s faculty director for accreditation from 2016 to 2020.

Tucker created the peritoneal dialysis program at DCI Faulkner and focuses on the management of patients with chronic kidney disease and patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis at in his clinical appointment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, according to the release.

“It is one of the highlights of my career as a nephrologist and an educator to receive this award named in honor of one of the luminaries in the field and to join such a distinguished group of colleagues who have received this award over the years,” Tucker said in the release. “Kidney disease disproportionately affects people of color and economically disadvantaged populations. I am passionate about providing care to these populations and working to eliminate disparities.”
