In this video, Leah Foster Smith, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, CNN-NP, FNKF, discusses an advanced practitioner and physician assistant pathway project she presented at the Renal Physicians Association Annual Meeting.

Smith is director of advanced practice providers (APPs) at Metrolina Nephrology Associates, PA in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she manages 40 nurse practitioners and physician assistants (PAs) on staff. The aim of the pathways project is to integrate the skills of APPs and PAs into the structure and goals of the physician practice.

“Our purpose behind the pathway was to attract APP leaders to come to the RPA [meeting], as well as to help nephrologists and practice managers know how to utilize effectively their APPs in their practice and learn tools and tips on how to retain APPs in their practice as well,” she said.
