Members of Congress call on Biden to prioritize kidney innovation in budget

Nearly 20 members of Congress signed a letter urging President Joe Biden to allocate $25 million for KidneyX in the executive budget for the 2023 fiscal year.
“For KidneyX to meet its full potential and continue to foster the development of technologies, such as a wearable or implantable artificial kidney and xenotransplantation, the federal government must increase its support for KidneyX by including $25 million for KidneyX in the [fiscal year] FY 2023 President’s budget,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “Including a full $25 million for KidneyX in the fiscal year 2023 President’s budget would allow the program to expand its record of success and continue to drive innovation for people with kidney diseases.”
According to a press release, the effort was led by Congressional Kidney Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Reps. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) and Larry Bucshon, MD, (R-Ind.). Kidney Care Partners (KCP) publicly supported the lawmakers’ letter.
“This critical funding for KidneyX is an important step toward addressing existing barriers to innovation in kidney care and ensuring patients have access to the most advanced innovations, treatments and therapies,” Michele Kimball, executive director of KCP, said. “KCP applauds the leadership of Representatives DelBene and Bucshon for advocating for innovations in kidney disease management so Americans living with kidney disease and kidney failure can continue to get the best care, access and choice there is.”
