KidneyX awards $3.9 million to Artificial Kidney Phase 1 winners

The HHS and the ASN announced the six winners of the Artificial Kidney Phase 1 competition, which began accepting submissions on Oct. 30, 2020.

Winning proposals included projects that “miniaturize and optimize technologies for toxin removal and volume control, new approaches to move xenotransplantation closer to human trials and cellular engineering platforms that more closely replicate human kidney function.” Each of the six winners received $650,000.

Phase 1 prize recipients include the following:

  • David Cooper, University of Alabama – Genetically Engineered Pig Kidney Xenotransplantation;
  • imec USA Nanoelectronics Design Center – MI-TRAM: Smart Module for Implantable, Wearable, Portable or Bed-side Artificial Kidneys;
  • Makana Therapeutics – Xenotransplantation: A treatment for Kidney Failure;
  • University of California San Francisco – iBAK – Implantable Bio-Artificial Kidney for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy;
  • University of Washington Center for Dialysis Innovation – The Wearable AKTIV: Artificial Kidney to Improve Vitality; and
  • US Kidney Research Corporation – Development of a Dialysis-Free Waterless Portable and Implantable Artificial Kidney.
