In this video perspective, George L. Bakris, MD, discusses the long-term influence of hypertension on patients with chronic kidney disease.
Bakris, a professor of medicine and director of the Comprehensive Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago Medicine, gave the perspective based on his presentation at the Evolving Concepts in the Management of Diabetes and Cardiorenal Metabolic Diseases workshop in Dallas.
He told Healio Nephrology there are a number of “unappreciated issues” in patients with diabetes, including regulation of blood pressure.
“These are patients who are older, have more brittle vasculature and tend to have low diastolic pressure,” Bakris said. “That can elevate the cardiovascular risk.”
