A new online portal by the National Kidney Foundation, called NKF Kidney Research Connect, links patients, care partners and donors with researchers for patient-centered outcomes research, according to a press release.

“Our main goal is to build the kidney community’s ability to engage as partners in patient-centered outcomes research and comparative effectiveness research by improving the knowledge of the patient-centered research process among investigators, patients, and other stakeholders and providing a platform to connect patients and researchers,” Kerry Willis, PhD, chief scientific officer of the NKF, said in the release.

The program will close a gap in kidney research that previously existed between the researchers and patients, according to the release. Kidney patients and care partners can choose to enroll in the portal through which they will receive updates on upcoming research projects. Researchers can register their projects with the portal and connect with patients who meet their study criteria.

The NKF held virtual workshops to introduce the portal to patients, care partners and researchers. The portal was created with funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

“It is important that we get the word out to all kidney patients, care partners and investigators, that they now have access to this free platform to connect with each other on research projects, as well as access valuable resources about how to engage in patient-centered outcomes research,” Jessica Joseph, NKF senior vice president of scientific operations, said in the release.

The portal will allow researchers to learn about issues that are most impactful and important to patients with kidney disease, according to the NKF Kidney Research Connect site.
