ASN launches new loan program to promote diversity in nephrology

The American Society of Nephrology launched its loan mitigation pilot program, committing $2,700,000 to selected recipients of underrepresented groups, according to a press release.
“This exciting ASN program will enhance the opportunities for the many talented medical graduates who hope to pursue a career in nephrology,” Susan E. Quaggin, MD, FASN, ASN president, said in the release. “ASN is thrilled to be able to offset the loan burden of those who will create future cures for the millions of people who live with kidney diseases.”
The 5-year pilot program will financially assist individuals pursuing training in nephrology and who are historically underrepresented in medicine, including those who self-identify as African American, Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Each award recipient will receive $50,000 in 3 years to put toward their educational loans. The inaugural year of the program will include six award recipients.
Nwamaka Eneanya, MD, MPH, FASN, chair of the ASN Loan Mitigation Task force, said in the release, “I feel strongly about promoting diversity within the nephrology community and providing opportunities to those individuals who are historically underrepresented in medicine.”
Applications for the first awards granted by the pilot program opened June 16 and are set to close on July 28.
