DaVita Kidney Care and the National Kidney Foundation have collaborated to launch a pilot of the developing kidney transplantation program “The Big Ask: The Big Give,” according to a press release.

Jeff Giullian

“Finding a living kidney donor is a big deal. NKF’s ‘The Big Ask: The Big Give’ program is a tremendous resource to empower patients with the knowledge and confidence to spread the word about their need and have these deeply personal conversations,” Jeff Giullian, MD, chief medical officer for DaVita, said in the release. “We hope that combining NKF’s innovative program with DaVita’s expertise in care delivery will improve health equity among patients receiving transplants from living donors in this pilot.”

The yearlong pilot program will launch in Colorado, New York, Minnesota and New Mexico. It will offer free virtual tools and support to kidney patients and families seeking a transplant from a living donor. The NKF designed the program to share living donation education with patients and potential donors or transplant advocates. The program promotes outreach to each patient’s community and helps encourage and empower groups to make “the big ask” and donors “the big give.”

The website for the program features materials about donating a kidney, the risks and what is involved prior to and after surgery. The website also highlights video testimonials from transplant recipients, donors and surgeons.

“Many people never find a living donor simply because they are afraid to ask,” Kevin Longino, NKF CEO and a kidney transplant patient, said in the release. “NKF’s ‘The Big Ask: The Big Give’ platform helps patients and families learn how to find a living donor and we are grateful to DaVita for their support in helping to reach patients in underserved areas.”
