Baxter International Inc. has added a new digital component to its resources for patients on peritoneal dialysis. According to a company press release, the tool assesses clinical data and maps treatment trends during a span of 180 days.

The module, known as Sharesource Analytics 1.0, stems from Baxter’s Sharesource digital health platform, which has been used throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to support remote patient care by reducing the need for in-person visits to adjust therapy, the release noted. Sharesource is used globally in the monitoring of patients from 70 countries.

The release suggested that because the module assesses “potentially slow-building issues,” such as patient adherence, catheter function and therapy fatigue, it allows for clinicians to intervene and resolve any complications patients might have with their treatments.

“Sharesource remote patient management platform has played a significant role through the COVID-19 pandemic in allowing patients with kidney failure — who often have immune dysfunction — to do their dialysis at home, where they can remain safer by socially distancing,” Peter Rutherford, MD, senior medical director of Baxter Renal Care business, said in the release. “With the launch of Sharesource Analytics 1.0, Baxter is again pioneering the next generation of digital health for nephrology that is designed to further empower remote clinical management of home dialysis patients.”

According to the release, Sharesource Analytics 1.0 will initially launch in the United States, and then will be implemented globally on a rolling basis in the next year; it will be available by subscription.
