The National Kidney Foundation awarded its 2021 Public Service Award to Aliza Thompson, MD, according to a press release.
Thompson is the fifth person to receive this honor. The NKF Public Service Award commends individuals who have dedicated themselves to public service while influencing policies and governmental programs that improve outcomes for kidney patients, according to the NKF.
“Dr. Thompson has been a steadfast advocate for advancing the care of individuals with kidney disease through her work at the [FDA],” NKF President Paul Palevsky, MD, said in the release.
Thompson serves as deputy director of cardiology and nephrology at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in the FDA. She has worked at the FDA since 2007. As deputy director of the division of cardiology and nephrology, Thompson helps regulate and review drug and marketing applications for new cardiovascular or kidney disease treatments. She previously worked as a clinical team leader for products under development for treating kidney diseases.
“I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Thompson on multiple occasions and appreciate all that she does to advance the development of safe and effective treatments for patients with acute and chronic kidney disease. We are grateful for Dr. Thompson’s work,” Palevsky said.
Thompson will receive the honor with other award recipients at the NKF 2021 Spring Clinical Meetings, which will take place virtually from April 6-10.
