The National Kidney Foundation will award the 2021 Shaul G. Massry Distinguished Lecture to James Lash, MD, according to a press release.
The lectureship has been awarded annually since 1996 to honor Shaul G. Massry, MD, a well-known figure in the kidney care community. The award celebrates contributions and scientific achievements to kidney care and the NKF.
“Jim has been a dedicated investigator, mentor to young scientists, incredible colleague and has helped the overall understanding of kidney disease, especially as it affects underserved populations,” NKF President Paul Palevsky, MD, said in the release. “I am grateful for his passion in our field.”
Lash, a professor and chief of the division of nephrology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine, researches the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease and interventional treatment trials aimed specifically at underrepresented groups in the United States. He serves as the UIC principal investigator for the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) and Hispanic CRIC Studies, sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The studies investigate risk factors for CKD progression and cardiovascular disease in patients with CKD.
Lash will receive the honor with other award recipients at the NKF 2021 Spring Clinical Meetings, which will take place virtually from April 6-10.
