The National Kidney Foundation awarded this year’s J. Michael Lazarus Award to Kirsten L. Johansen, MD, FASN, according to a press release.
Johansen is the 11th nephrologist to receive this award. According to the release, J. Michael Lazarus, MD, was known for his considerable contributions to the care of patients on dialysis. The award is given those whose research helped advance renal replacement therapy.
“Dr. Johansen’s research has direct impact on how we can improve the care of patients with kidney disease, to decrease the effects of debility and improve their physical function and quality of life,” NKF President Paul Palevsky, MD, said in the release.
Johansen serves as the nephrology division director at Hennepin County Medical Center, co-director of the Chronic Disease Research Group and professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota. She has concentrated her work on the physical function of patients with end-stage kidney disease, as well as interventions to improve it. Johansen has also investigated the epidemiology of kidney disease, looking at racial and ethnic disparities in disease progression and access to transplantation.
“[Johansen] is committed to mentoring the next generation of nephrology investigators. Her ebullient personality and enthusiasm for her work impacts everyone who works with her. I am honored to present Kirsten this lectureship in Dr. Lazarus’ name,” Palevsky said.
Johansen will receive the honor with other award recipients at the NKF 2021 Spring Clinical Meetings, which will take place virtually from April 6-10.
