Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes is prioritizing its evidence-based guidelines, expanding the guideline development process “to include more frequent and rapid updates,” according to a press release.

“KDIGO is more committed than ever to keeping guidelines up to date,” Wolfgang Winkelmayer, MD, a co-chair for the organization, said in the release.

More specifically, the release stated KDIGO is in the process of reviewing all of its guidelines; a work group and independent evidence review team will focus on those which require updates.

Current efforts include updates to the following:

  • the 2012 Clinical Practice Guideline for Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease;
  • the 2018 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Prevention, Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of Hepatitis C in CKD; and
  • the Clinical Practice Guideline on Diabetes Management in CKD (to begin in 2021).

Noting that while all updates and guidelines are already available free of charge, all future changes will be available on the Kidney International website, the KDIGO website and the KDIGO app.

“Emerging new science must be made readily available,” Winkelmayer said. “That is becoming a more important part of KDIGO’s agenda as we develop guidelines on new topics in addition to renewing the existing library of KDIGO guidelines. We’re excited to be a pioneer in this process and to act as a leader of guideline development in global nephrology.”
