KidneyX has launched the COVID-19 Kidney Care Challenge, offering a total of $300,000 in prize money.

According to a press release, the challenge seeks to encourage the development of solutions that either reduce the transmission of the virus to patients with kidney disease or that reduce the risk of kidney damage if the virus is contracted.

“We have accelerated critical health care innovation at an unprecedented rate as we race to stop the pandemic’s devastating toll on human lives,” HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan said in the release. “As our knowledge about COVID-19 continues to grow, there is now an opportunity — and need — to disseminate solutions for the benefit of others.”

The challenge is specifically focused on identifying “replicable solutions” that can be shared across health care communities, according to the release.

John R. Sedor, MD, chair of the KidneyX steering committee, also commented on what the organization hopes to accomplish with the challenge.

“COVID-19’s heavy impact will be felt for decades to come, drastically intensifying inequities within the American health care system,” he said in the release. “The COVID-19 Kidney Care Challenge, alongside KidneyX’s ongoing work, offers us a way to potentially improve outcomes for patients in the near term — as well as help set innovation roadmaps for the health challenges of the future.”

Round 1 of the challenge is accepting solutions until Dec. 4, 2020.
