Nephrology News & Issues names new associate editors

Healio has named Graham Abra, MD, and Anna Burgner, MD, MEHP, associate editors for Nephrology News & Issues and Healio Nephrology. The positions are new additions to the Nephrology News & Issues Editorial Advisory Board.

Abra and Burgner will assist Nephrology News & Issues Editorial Advisory Board Chair Thomas Golper, MD, and Co-chair Jay Wish, MD, and board members in identifying topics of interest in nephrology and support social media efforts for editorial published in Nephrology News & Issues and on Healio Nephrology.

Abra is a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the division of nephrology at Stanford University and is the senior director of medical clinical affairs at Satellite Healthcare. Abra’s clinical practice focuses on the care of patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and he has a particular interest in home dialysis therapies. He has served as the medical director of WellBound San Jose, a home dialysis center, for the past 5 years and has an interest in physician education.

Abra earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine in 2006, followed by internal medicine residency and a year as a chief medical resident at UCSD. He completed a nephrology fellowship at Stanford, spending 2 years on research in the Stanford Clinical Excellence Research Center.

“I am excited to join the editorial team at Nephrology News & Issues (NNI), which has a unique and valuable perspective within the nephrology community,” Abra said. “I look forward to growing the social media presence of NNI and providing input on the topics that are of greatest interest to nephrologists today.”

Burgner is an assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and is also the associate program director for the nephrology fellowship. She also serves as the director of the university’s inpatient dialysis clinic. She received her Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2007, completed her internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and earned her Master of Education in the Health Professions at Johns Hopkins University in 2015.

“Medical education is a constant, never ending process for all in medical fields,” Burgner said. “Nephrology News & Issues fills a unique role in education of medical professionals in the field of nephrology, and I’m excited to join the editorial team and look forward to further growing its educational value.”
