Baxter International has expanded its partnership with behavioral science-based digital health company Ayogo Health Inc. to support patients with kidney disease through digital platforms, according to a press release.

“As a leader in renal care innovation and pioneer in digital health solutions for patients with kidney failure, our collaboration with Ayogo allows us to provide health care professionals and patients more confidence in their therapy options, including home dialysis,” Laura Angelini, general manager for Baxter’s Renal Care business, said in the release. “This is particularly important in the midst of the pandemic, when it is critical to support patients with digital health tools that empower them to perform dialysis in the safety of their home, while staying connected with their health care team.”

The release indicated that in addition to continuing work on their first collaboration project, an app providing customized disease and therapy education for patients known as CKD&Me, the companies are enhancing Baxter’s remote patient management platform for home dialysis. The Sharesource platform, currently used by health care professionals in 65 countries, will now also help patients manage their home-based care.

According to the release, studies have demonstrated substantial benefits of using Sharesource, with automated peritoneal dialysis therapy found to be associated with a 56% reduction in technique failure and a 39% reduction in hospitalizations.

“Patients using Baxter’s [automated peritoneal dialysis (APD)] systems with Sharesource to perform therapy can be closely monitored by their health care professionals without leaving their homes,” the release elaborated. “Health care professionals can then act on this information by remotely adjusting their patients’ home device settings without requiring them to make additional trips to the clinic.”

Michael Fergusson, CEO of Ayogo, also weighed in on the expanded partnership.

“Ayogo’s vision is of an empowered patient, successful on their own terms, with tools and support dynamically tailored to the unique characteristics and circumstances of their life,” he said. “We’re very excited that Baxter shares this vision.”
