U.S. News & World Report has released the 31st edition of its “Best Hospitals” rankings, which includes the best hospitals for nephrology. For 2020 to 2021, the Mayo Clinic again ranked number one.
For this edition, U.S. News has paid special attention to the ways in which COVID-19 has impacted the medical community, according to a press release. In response to the pandemic, the publication developed a Hospital Heroes series, which recognizes health care professionals through more than 65 profiles, as well as commentaries on how hospital staff have managed the outbreak.
“No hospital’s clinical team came through this unprecedented health crisis unscathed,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in the release. “Our Hospital Heroes series is a tribute to recognizing individuals at urban and rural hospitals in communities across the country who have gone above and beyond during this unparalleled time in history.”
The release further noted that the pandemic has exposed far-reaching disparities in health care; thus, U.S. News will continue its efforts to ensure these disparities are quantified and considered when measuring the quality of individual hospital care.
The top ranked hospitals for nephrology for 2020 to 2021 include:
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester in Minnesota;
- New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell in New York;
- UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles;
- Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore;
- Cleveland Clinic;
- Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston;
- Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston;
- UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco;
- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles;
- Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
“The pandemic has altered, perhaps permanently, how patients get care and from whom they get it,” Harder said. “Amid the disruption, we are steadfastly committed to providing the public with authoritative data for comparing hospital quality.”
