Fresenius Medical Care North America has donated $250,000 to the Food is Medicine Coalition, an act which the company hopes will help ensure patients with kidney failure receive adequate nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

According to a company press release, the nonprofit organizations supported by the coalition deliver specialized meals to patients with chronic illnesses to “improve health outcomes, lower cost of care and increase patient satisfaction.” Since the onset of COVID-19, the organizations have reported higher patient demand than usual.

“While members of [Food is Medicine Coalition] FIMC have been working hard to respond to the unprecedented demand for nutritious, medically tailored meals driven by COVID-19, it’s clear that we have more work to do to keep our critically and chronically ill neighbors safe and healthy throughout the pandemic,” David Waters, CEO of Community Servings, a meal-delivery service based in Boston, said in the press release. “With this incredible gift from Fresenius Medical Care North America, we will be able to safeguard even more at-risk, vulnerable members of our communities, by delivering the healthy, scratch-made food they so desperately need right to their door.”

Karen Pearl, chair of the coalition, also expressed gratitude to Fresenius for its support, adding that “The nutritious meals that FIMC organizations provide are critical to all of our clients’ health and well-being, and help them stay at home and out of the hospital where they are safest and most comfortable.”

Bill Valle

Bill Valle, CEO of Fresenius, weighed in on the contribution, noting many patients with chronic diseases regularly struggle to obtain nutritious meals and that this struggle has increased during the pandemic.

“We are committed to addressing the growing demand for healthy food by helping provide medically tailored meals for people living with kidney failure,” he said.
