Kerry Willis

Kerry Willis, PhD, was presented with the Garabed Eknoyan Award at the virtual National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings. Willis serves as chief scientific officer for the organization.

According to a press release from the NKF, the award recognizes individuals who have made contributions to NKF’s mission of improving lives for patients with kidney disease, such as efforts in clinical research and on furthering “key NKF initiatives.” The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) is an example of such an initiative.

“Little did we know, when we started KDOQI, that our guidelines would transform clinical practice, not just in the United States but all over the world, and at the same time transform NKF,” Willis said in the release. “I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to help provide better care to millions of people, who will have the chance to lead longer, healthier lives because of KDOQI.”

After receiving her doctorate in molecular genetics from NYU, Willis joined the NKF in 1998, according to the release. In addition to her work on KDOQI, she has contributed to public policy and legislative advocacy for increasing access to care, while promoting best clinical practices for earlier detection and treatment of kidney disease.

“Kerry has dedicated much of her career to kidney health, advocacy and science,” Holly Kramer, MD, president of the NKF, said. “She is responsible for so much of the advances in kidney medicine in recent years including her latest project, the NKF Patient Network. It is an honor to recognize her in this way.”
