Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation adopts updated dialysis standards

The International Organization for Standardization has released an updated series of standards that provide health care professionals with guidelines for ensuring the quality and safety of dialysis fluids, according to a press release.
Adopted by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the American National Standards Institute, parts one to five of the series focus on risk management, prevention and remediation to improve patient outcomes, with an emphasis on the relative nature of dialysis fluid requirements.
“Making the related standards a series should help health care professionals, manufacturers, designers and suppliers to the hemodialysis community navigate important information and requirements for dialysis water, dialysis fluid and their preparation,” Jo-Ann Maltais, co-chair of the AAMI Renal Disease and Detoxification Committee, said in the release.
Series updates include microbiology testing methods, sampling methods and application, proper handling of testing samples and home hemodialysis safety.
