Dialyze Direct, Arbor Research to investigate treatment approaches for older patients with ESKD

Dialyze Direct will partner with Arbor Research Collaborative for Health to assess practices of care and outcomes among elderly vs. younger patients with ESKD treated by hemodialysis.
The research is an update to a 2011 study conducted by Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) and will analyze data from patients receiving hemodialysis in 19 countries. Dialyze Direct specializes in providing staff-assisted home dialysis in nursing homes and operates in nine states.
“The clinical care of this group is complex and challenging, yet there is little consensus within the nephrology community on how to best manage these high-risk patients. Studies such as this serve to inform clinical practice decisions,” the company said in a press release.
The study will describe and compare hemodialysis treatment practices for ESKD in elderly patients (compared to other age groups), survival and quality of life, and evaluate whether dialysis prescription for elderly patients differs from that of younger patients. A comparison of these same outcomes will also be carried out among patients living in a nursing home, assisted living or other institution vs. those living in a more traditional home.
The study will include data gathered between the years of 2009 and 2018.
“We are very excited by this support and collaboration with Dialyze Direct in evaluating dialysis prescription, guideline measure achievement and key outcomes — and in particular patient quality of life — among the elderly compared with those of younger patients,” Ronald Pisoni, PhD, MS, senior research scientist at Arbor Research and Deputy Principal Investigator for the DOPPS, told Healio/Nephrology. “We look forward to this effort helping to address some of the knowledge gaps that currently exist, especially in the care and outcomes of elderly persons receiving maintenance hemodialysis for end stage kidney disease.”
