WASHINGTON — At ASN Kidney Week, Abdul A. Abdellatif, MD, FASN, presented results that assessed the relationship between gout and return to hemodialysis among patients who had a kidney transplant. Researchers found patients who developed gout after transplantation were more likely to need maintenance hemodialysis compared with patients without gout and those with preexisting gout.

“What this meant to us is trying to understand further the association between the disease state and the complications related to this disease state in our transplantation patients to help us prolong their renal survival by controlling all the different aspects that may cause progression of their kidney disease, including this association of developing gout after transplant,” he said.
