HHS awards contract to Outset Medical for emergency dialysis systems
Outset Medical has received a contract from the HHS for the use of its Tablo Hemodialysis Systems during natural disasters. The HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response intends to begin using the dialysis systems by the end of 2019.
“Emergencies such as hurricanes and floods can severely impede dialysis services,” Leslie Trigg, CEO of Outset Medical, said in a press release. “Tablo’s design enables fast deployment to the field using existing water sources in the disaster-affected community. Its simplicity accelerates training and set-up. We are honored to partner with HHS in helping fulfill their mission.”
According to the release, the Tablo dialysis machine serves as a “dialysis clinic on wheels.” With it, receiving treatments at a clinic — which can be both expensive and inconvenient — becomes unnecessary, because the machine can operate using only an electrical outlet and tap water. In addition, because the machine incorporates sensors to monitor physiological parameters, no additional equipment to obtain clinical data is required.
