The American Kidney Fund has launched a new health education campaign for patients with kidney disease, according to a press release. The campaign, entitled Beyond Bananas, is designed to bolster patient-knowledge of hyperkalemia, thereby better enabling potassium control.
“It’s often challenging for kidney patients to stick with a complex and demanding treatment regimen, with diet and medication being reported as some of the largest challenges in treatment adherence,” Michael Spigler, vice president of patient services and kidney disease education at the AKF, told Healio/Nephrology. “Because of these challenges, Beyond Bananas was launched to increase kidney patients’ understanding of high potassium and to empower them to control their potassium levels, which actually goes beyond diet alone for kidney patients.”
According to Spigler, the webpage associated with the campaign currently features educational content — including foods that contain high/low amounts of potassium, potassium-friendly recipes and key symptoms of high potassium — and will later include videos and additional tools for both patients and health care professionals.
“Many people living with kidney disease often have to re-educate themselves on healthy habits through diet, medication and lifestyle, because much of what they learned in school, no longer applies to their health,” Spigler said. “With Beyond Bananas, we’re tackling a complex subject through engaging tools and resources to help people with kidney disease live longer, healthier lives.”
