U.S. News & World Report has released the 30th edition of its “Best Hospitals” rankings, which includes the best hospitals for nephrology. For 2019 to 2020, the Mayo Clinic again ranked number one for nephrology, as well as number one on the “Best Hospitals Honor Roll.” The honor roll recognizes a small group of hospitals with high rankings in multiple Best Hospitals specialties.

According to a press release, this year U.S. News updated its methodology for determining the rankings. These updates included two additional patient-centered measures in each specialty, an enhanced risk-adjustment model to account for differences in patient populations so that hospitals that treat sicker patients are not penalized and the harmonization of outcome measurement in the specialty rankings with the U.S. News Procedures & Conditions ratings.

“In the 3 decades since U.S. News began evaluating hospitals, we periodically have revamped our measures to enhance the decision support our rankings and ratings provide to patients,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in the release. “This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals’ patient populations. The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families and their medical professionals.”

The top ranked hospitals for nephrology for 2019 to 2020 include:

  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester in Minnesota;
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore;
  • UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles;
  • Cleveland Clinic;
  • New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell in New York;
  • UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco;
