After a 5-year absence, the contract for the United States Renal Data System and its annual report will return to the Chronic Disease Research Group of the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute. The NIH awarded the 5-year contract on June 13.

The United States Renal Data System (USRDS) is a national registry that collects, analyzes and distributes information about CKD and ESRD in the United States. The first annual report was published in 1989.

“We’re so excited to have our team contribute to the fight against kidney disease,” Kirsten L. Johansen, MD, director of the USRDS and of the division of nephrology at Hennepin Healthcare at Hennepin County Medical Center, said in a press release. She is co-director of the Chronic Disease Research Group (CDRG) and professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota. “Data collected and disseminated through the USRDS about kidney disease in the U.S., its treatment and its impact will be used by patients, their doctors, kidney researchers and the federal government to learn how to improve the care we provide for this devastating condition.”

The University of Michigan, which has had the USRDS contact since 2014, will finalize a 2019 report and then turn over the responsibility to CDRG, which was the federal contractor for the USRDS from 1999 to 2014 and currently manages the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
