Two legislators have introduced a bill in the Congress that would offer an add-on payment to the Medicare composite rate for dialysis treatments when providers use new medical devices.

Rep. Danny K . Davis, D-IL, and Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, R-IN, introduced H.R. 2710, “The Patient Access to ESRD New Innovative Devices Act,” on May 14. The bill calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to make changes to the Medicare payment for dialysis to “allow a pathway for innovation in new medical devices that improve dialysis treatment and outcomes.”

Tonya Saffer, vice president of policy for the NKF, said the program would be budget neutral. “We are excited about this legislation,” she told Healio/Nephrology. “We hope it will help spur innovation in kidney care.”

The bill has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means committees for consideration. – by Mark E. Neumann
