University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine professor receives NKF award

Beth Piraino, MD, professor of medicine and associate dean of admissions and financial aid at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was presented with the J. Michael Lazarus Award at the National Kidney Foundation’s 2019 Spring Clinical Meetings.
The award recognizes individuals whose research yield novel insights related to renal replacement therapy, according to a press release.
“Dr. Piraino has been improving the lives of kidney patients for many years and we are happy to be able to recognize her important work,” Holly Kramer, MD, MPH, president of the NKF, said in the release. “Her life-long work with patients makes her an obvious choice for this award.”
Piraino focuses her clinical research on PD, particularly on the prevention of PD-related infections, as well as improving outcomes for patients on home dialysis.
Additionally, she served as a member of the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) board of directors, was secretary of the ISPD and the director of the PD program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, according to the release.
“I am honored to receive this award named for an innovative physician who improved the care for those with advanced kidney disease on hemodialysis,” Piraino said in the release. “I hope in some small way I, along with my colleagues, have advanced the care of those on peritoneal dialysis, improving the lives of patients and allowing for patient choice."
