Need for ‘urgency’ when caring for patients with kidney diseases: KidneyX announces Redesign Dialysis award winners

WASHINGTON — KidneyX, a public-private partnership between the HHS and the American Society of Nephrology, was created to “spur the development of prize competitions of transformational products that will improve the lives of patients,” according to a speaker at the KidneyX Summit. One such competition is Redesign Dialysis, whose phase one winners were announced today.
“The morbidity, the mortality and the burden of kidney disease on patients and their families has been minimized to the point where it’s unconscionable,” John Sedor, MD, FASN, newly appointed chair of the KidneyX Steering Committee, said during a presentation. “I think this is in part due to the availability of dialysis as a therapy. [Many doctors] think, ‘at least we have dialysis,’ without thinking what that really means for the patient and, because of that, the urgency in this area has been stifled.”
Of the 165 ideas submitted to phase one of the Redesign Dialysis competition, 15 teams were selected to win a prize of $75,000 each.
The selections were categorized as “diagnostic,” “improving dialysis” or “engineering,” with topics ranging from innovations in vascular access and fluid filtration to innovations in hemodialysis and biosensors.
Most ideas centered on earlier detection of complications and patient-centered care.
As Dean Hu, MD, of Outset Medical in San Jose, California, and submitter of an “automated multimodal sensor” designed to improve patient outcomes in hemodialysis, said, “Their treatment has to be personal.”
Phase two of the competition will begin accepting submissions in fall 2019, and up to three winners will be awarded $500,000 each.
“We have to remember that the time is now,” Sedor said. “We have a short time to be successful and there’s urgency that we’ve neglected for a long time in the area of kidney diseases.”
