KidneyX recently announced it has closed the application period for the first phase of its Redesign Dialysis competition after receiving 165 submissions.

KidneyX is the result of a partnership between the HHS and the American Society of Nephrology. With a mission to support innovative strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, KidneyX launched the Redesign Dialysis competition. Applicants to the competition seek to accelerate the development and commercialization of next-generation dialysis products.

According to a press release, the first phase of the competition asked individuals or teams to submit solutions or solution components that can replicate normal kidney functions and improve patient quality of life through improved vascular access, filtration and fluid regulation.

Redesign Dialysis is a two-phase prize, according to the release. Phase 2 will ask participants to develop and demonstrate prototype solutions. Beginning in April 2019, the second phase of the competition includes three awards of $500,000. Individuals or teams do not need to have participated in phase 1 to submit for phase 2.

Applications for phase 1 are being reviewed by a set of subject matter experts. KidneyX will announce up to 15 awards of $75,000 on April 29, 2019.
