Fresenius Medical Care has appointed Frank Maddux, MD, to head up its new Global Medical Office and is promoting Robert Kossmann, MD, as the company’s new chief medical officer for North America, replacing Maddux.

In addition, Jeffrey Hymes, MD, currently chief medical officer for Fresenius Kidney Care, will expand his role to also serve as senior vice president of Clinical and Scientific Affairs for North America.

“The newly created Global Medical Office seeks to further advance the application of clinical science and facilitate the exchange of knowledge across the company’s global network to ensure high quality outcomes for patients worldwide,” the company said in a press release.

According to the release, Maddux has more than 30 years of experience in health care. He has been working for Fresenius Medical Care since 2009 and previously served as executive vice president for clinical & scientific affairs.

Kossmann practiced nephrology in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 20 years. He joined Fresenius Medical Care in 2014, overseeing the clinical research, development and distribution of the company’s products and pharmaceuticals throughout North America. He is a past president of the Renal Physicians Association.

Hymes has more than 30 years of experience in leading medical operations in both nephrology practices and multiple dialysis organizations. In addition to his expanded clinical and scientific affairs responsibilities, he will continue his support of Fresenius Kidney Care as its chief medical officer, a role in which he has spearheaded multiple translational medicine initiatives.

“The creation of a Global Medical Office under Dr. Maddux’s leadership will help us coordinate the interpretation of clinical science and medical practice patterns on a global basis,” Fresenius Medical Care North America CEO, Bill Valle, said in the release. “Delivering on our commitment to improve the quality of life of people living with kidney disease, Dr. Maddux and his team will pursue evolving medical opportunities, such as a more focused home offering. Dr. Kossmann and our great team of clinical leaders at Fresenius Medical Care North America will work to make an even greater impact through this improved global collaboration and focus on innovation.”
