The American Association of Kidney Patients announced recipients of its 2019 Medal of Excellence.

“As American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) celebrates our 50th anniversary, it is an honor to recognize professionals who are committed to improving and extending the lives of all kidney patients through research, technology and quality treatments that increase patient care choice and better align with their aspirations to live, work and contribute,” Richard Knight, AAKP president and a kidney transplant recipient, said in a press release. “AAKP’s national strategy is designed to increase patient engagement and advocacy through alliances with credible experts and organizations and our 2019 Medal of Excellence recipients exceed the highest levels of professional excellence from the patient viewpoint and are superb representatives for their respective fields.”

Sherilyn Gordon, MD, FACS, of the Methodist Hospital in Houston was recognized for her work in the transplant surgeon category. Her award was presented posthumously at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Winter Symposium on Jan. 12.

Stephen Z. Fadem, MD, FACP, FASN, of Kidney Associates LLC in Houston; Barbara Casazza, FNP, of The Rogosin Institute in Woodside, New York; Renee Bova-Collis, MSW, LCSW, of Quality Insights Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition in Richmond, Virginia; and Stacey Phillips, RD, LD, of Mercy Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be honored at the Medal of Excellence Award Dinner held in conjunction with the Renal Physicians Association’s Annual Meeting on March 29. Fadem will be awarded for the physician category; Casazza will be awarded for the nursing category; Bova-Collins will be awarded for the social work category and Phillips will be honored for the dietetic category.

Ronald Gill, PhD, of the Colorado Center for Transplantation Care in Aurora, Colorado, will be recognized and awarded in transplant professional category at the American Society of Transplantation Town Hall on June 3.

According to the AAKP release, the review committee selected the honorees based on numerous nominations and all are recognized at events hosted throughout the year in front of a community of their peers.
