Peritoneal dialysis-related infection, mortality and fatigue were the highest priority for patients on peritoneal dialysis and their caregivers, with a focus on health, lifestyle and self-management, according to recently published results.

Researchers prospectively sampled patients on PD and their caregivers from nine dialysis units in Australia, Hong Kong and the United States. Patients identified and ranked outcomes and discussed reasons for their choices using the nominal group technique. Investigators calculated an importance score for each outcome and analyzed qualitative data thematically.

There were 56 outcomes identified among 14 groups and 126 participants. PD infection, mortality, fatigue, flexibility with time, blood pressure, PD failure, ability to travel, sleep, ability to work and impact on family were the 10 highest ranked outcomes. In Australia, mortality was ranked first, second in Hong Kong and in the United States it was ranked 15th. Among the five themes that explained participants’ ranking of outcomes were serious and cascading consequences on health, current and impending relevance, maintain role and social functioning, requiring constant vigilance, and beyond control and responsibility. – by Monica Jaramillo
