SAN DIEGO — At ASN Kidney Week 2018, Francesca Tentori, MD, MS, medical director of clinical research for DaVita, spoke about results of a study that identified the risk factors of initial admission and readmission among patients who receive in-center hemodialysis at DaVita.
Tentori said of the 130,000 patients in the study, cardiovascular causes were the most common cause of readmission. Additionally, the cause of readmission was closely related to the cause of prior hospitalization, she said.
“The question is: If a patient goes back to the hospital within 30 days for the same reason, was that initial cause of admission really taken care of during that stay or was the patient discharged while there were some pending issues? Do patients actually get the care they need in the hospital and can we do something [that is] preventing readmissions by addressing the index hospitalization?” she said.
