M. Amin Arnaout, MD, bestowed Homer W. Smith Award

SAN DIEGO — The 2018 Homer W. Smith Award was presented to M. Amin Arnaout, MD, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, today at ASN Kidney Week 2018.

Established in 1964, the annual award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the science and physiology of nephrology, Barbara T. Murphy, MB, BCh, chair of ASN Award Selection Committee, said.

“ASN is proud to present this award,” she said.

Arnaout discovered the central role that leukocyte adhesion plays in human innate immunity. He has worked on breakthrough papers in the biology, structure and function of integrins.

Arnaout has also made several other discoveries, including elucidating the autobody nature of C3 nephritic factor, identifying proteinase 3 as the target antigen in Wegener's granulomatosis and demonstrating the critical role of polycystic 1 in blood vessels. He and his team identified novel inhibitors of integrin function yielding therapies that recover kidney function after injury.

Arnaout is widely recognized as an innovative investigator, educator and leader, according to ASN.

“It is indeed a great honor to be a recipient of the Homer W. Smith Award and be recognized as a genius in our field for my work,” Arnaout said. – by Alaina Tedesco
