Pediatric patients who underwent contrast-enhanced CT experienced low rates of post-contrast AKI, dialysis therapy and death, according to results.

Using a propensity analysis that incorporated clinical covariates related to contrast exposure, researchers compared risks for AKI, dialysis therapy and death between pediatric patients who underwent contrast-enhanced CT (n=1,773) or unenhanced CT (n=428) between December 2001 and January 2016.

Results showed the contrast group had a rate of AKI of 3.3% and a rate of dialysis therapy of 0.1%. However, researchers found no differences in risk for AKI, dialysis therapy or death between the contrast and non-contrast groups following propensity score adjustment. Patients diagnosed with post-CT stage 3 AKI had contrast-independent potential causes of AKI, according to results. – by Casey Tingle
