When Congress approved funding for the ESRD Program in 1972, the intent was to provide lifesaving care to people with kidney disease so they could continue to contribute to society. That included helping those who wanted to stay employed. However, changes in the profile of the typical patient on dialysis — older, with more complications like diabetes and heart disease — has limited the program’s success at rehabilitation.

The American Association of Kidney Patients, in partnership with the Medical Education Institute, developed the KidneyWorks initiative in 2017 to help patients not yet on dialysis to find ways to go back to work or keep their current jobs. The association will host a HealthLine webinar on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. EST to discuss tools available for patients to stay employed or return to the workforce. The HealthLine webinar is presented in collaboration with the IPRO Network of New England; IPRO Network of New York; IPRO Network of the South Atlantic; Quality Insights Renal Networks 3, 4 and 5; Network 8 Inc.; and HealthInsight Northwest Renal Network. Speakers include experts in employment and vocational rehabilitation issues who will discuss tools, resources and renal replacement therapy options that support continued employment along with information on re-entry into the workforce for individuals who are able to return to work following disability or receiving a kidney transplant.

“AAKP has been a consistent champion of kidney patients and their efforts to choose treatments that best align with their desires to stay in the workforce and pursue their careers,” said Paul T. Conway, president of AAKP. “AAKP strongly defends disability benefits and rights for all kidney patients but understands that most patients are better positioned to pursue their aspirations when they are able to remain in the workforce either full-time or part-time, thus the importance of treatment choices including pre-emptive transplants and home dialysis.”

The webinar is free to attend, but registration is required by visiting https://aakp.org/aakp-healthline/. For more information about KidneyWorks, visit: www.kidneyworks.org/.
