The American Society of Transplantation presented its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award to Robert Gaston, MD, professor emeritus in the division of nephrology, University of Alabama-Birmingham, for his contributions to AST and the field of transplantation.
Gaston, who served as AST president from 2011-2012, has “provided life-saving transplants for thousands of patients and has helped over 100 fellows become established investigators,” the AST said in a statement.
Gaston was medical director of the kidney and pancreas transplant programs from 2003-2015 during his career at UAB, and interim division director of nephrology in 2013. He was co-founder of UAB’s Comprehensive Transplant Institute in 2011, and became the inaugural holder of the Robert G. Luke Endowed Chair in transplant nephrology in 2013.
With the help of funding from the NIH, foundations, and industry, Gaston’s broad experience in hypertension, immunology, public policy and solid organ transplantation led to research that filled more than 300 articles, book chapters and abstracts.
