End-stage renal disease seamless care organizations that participate in the Comprehensive ESRD Care Model demonstration can use telehealth services at a patient’s home or in the dialysis clinic starting Oct. 1.

The policy, issued by CMS on April 27, will give the ESRD seamless care organizations a head start over the rest of the renal community, which can start using telehealth services January 1. Congress approved a telehealth bill for dialysis and other health care providers in February as part of the passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018.

As part of the telehealth services law, patients who receive the care at home must also have a “face-to-face” visit by nephrologist or practitioner at least once a month during the initial 3 months of home dialysis and then, after the initial 3 months, at least once every 3 consecutive months.
