Survey of nephrology training program indicates most graduates no longer perform kidney biopsies
Most graduates from a nephrology training program who responded to an online survey no longer perform kidney biopsies, according to a study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. In addition, about half of nephrology program directors who responded noted that biopsy procedural competence should not be required.
To inform future biopsy training, investigators conducted an anonymous online survey of 82 Walter Reed training program graduates and 149 United States nephrology program directors.
Investigators found almost two-thirds of graduate respondents no longer performed these procedures. Most graduates reported they felt adequately trained in kidney biopsy (83%), transplant biopsy (82%) and tissue interpretation (78%). Both program directors and graduate respondents most commonly cited logistics and time as barriers to performing biopsies.
According to the study, 51% of responding directors said they felt biopsy procedural competence should not be a requirement; however, 97% agreed that fellows should demonstrate competence in knowing/managing indications, contraindications and complications. – by Jake Scott
